Over the past year, Seventh Generation Interfaith's Board of Directors and staff have been engaged in a careful process of discernment about the future of SGI.
With support from consultants funded through the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation capacity-building grant, we conducted strategic planning, gathered input from members through surveys and conversations, and explored potential models for the sustainability of our organization. We also assessed SGI's financial position, including the conclusion of the Hilton grant, declining reserves, and significant uncertainty about members' long-term capacity to sustain this work.
After much prayer, consultation, and reflection, the Board has reached the difficult conclusion and recommendation that SGI cannot continue in its current form and will begin the process for responsible closure.
We explored alternative models, such as expanding membership to asset managers or building support through legacy planning, but they were determined not to be viable given our resources, timeframe, and the broader headwinds facing shareholder advocacy.
This recommendation carries both sorrow and gratitude. Sorrow, because SGI has been a trusted home for over 50 years of faith-based shareholder advocacy. Over our history, SGI has grown to more than 30 member organizations, and members engaged over 60 companies, leading and participating in over 100 different engagements on issues ranging from climate change, corporate governance, food sustainability, water stewardship, health equity, and human rights. Gratitude, because of the remarkable legacy we share and the profound impact of our collective witness in carrying forward Fr. Mike Crosby's legacy.
As part of this transition, please know that we are committed to honoring SGI's history, encouraging our members to continue their engagement through ICCR and Ceres:
ICCR is a coalition of faith- and values-based investors who view shareholder engagement with corporations as a powerful catalyst for change. If your organization is interested in exploring membership in ICCR and you would like additional information about ICCR's member benefits, please contact Mary Hiebert at [email protected]
Since 2016, SGI has been a member of the Ceres Investor Network. Ceres is a nonprofit advocacy organization working to accelerate the transition to a cleaner, more just, and resilient world. Its Investor Network provides resources on responsible investment, supports investors to engage their portfolio companies, and helps them advocate for science-based policies. If your firm is interested in joining the Ceres Investor Network, please contact [email protected]
SGI will be facilitating meetings with these groups so members can continue to find ways to deliver on this mission.
SGI's last day of operations will be January 31, 2026.
Thank you for your support of SGI over the years. We are proud of the remarkable legacy we created together.
